Seamen Extend Strike To Friday

IMGP7665The Panhellenic Seamen’s Union (PNO) has voted to continue its strike for another 48 hours despite a government ultimatum that they end labor action, currently in its sixth day.
Union members on Tuesday voted to reject a deal offered by the Merchant Marine Ministry and decided instead to extend the strike until 6 a.m. Friday.
The government is said to be considering the seamen’s civil mobilization to force them back to work. The same tactic has been used to end previous strikes by seamen.
In addition to the payment of back pay owed workers by shipping companies, the union wants the ministry to withdraw proposed legislation restructuring maritime labor and a collective wage agreement.
