Poros Protests Tax Office Closing

Scores of Poros citizens, including the mayor, marched from the town hall to the local tax office (DOY) in Pounta this morning to protest a Finance Ministry decision to close its tax office branch on the island. The protest was joined by boatmen who traced the route in their boats alongside pedestrians and taxi drivers in their vehicles.
The protest was joined by thirteen local professional associations and citizens’ groups including the Poros Citizens and Consumers Association.
The march ended outside the tax office where Poros Mayor Dimitris Stratigos spoke briefly thanking those present for their support. He said the municipal council was actively working to reverse the decision and had offered to cover the branch’s operating costs.
Mayors from the Cyclades and Saronic isles were due to meet in Athens later today with Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras to discuss the planned closures.
Similar protests are also being staged on Spetses, where the DOY branch has been under symbolic occupation since Tuesday morning, and on Salamina where locals have planned a protest rally tomorrow morning.
