Petition demands solution for waste treatment problems

Some 257 Poros residents have signed a petition calling on the Municipality of Poros to commission an independent study of the problems with the operation of the waste treatment plant (BIOKA) and the immediate implementation of solutions proposed by the study.
The petition demanding a permanent solution to the plant’s problems was present to local authorities last week.
“We won’t spend the rest of our lives here in these conditions of degradation of the environment, life quality, property, businesses, and rights as local citizens who fulfill our obligations by paying municipal taxes without the Municipality reciprocating its obligation in providing services,” the petition said.
Problems cited included the irregular operation of the waste treatment network, odor in the harbor and western end of the island, and waste seepage from damage to the network.
