Agios Georgios Declared a Monument



StGeorge1Two churches, one of them Agios Georgios in Poros Town, decorated with frescoes by the Greek painter Konstantinos Parthenis have been declared historically preserved monuments by the Central Council of Modern Monuments.
The decision recognizes Parthenis’s importance to contemporary Greek culture.
Parthenis was born ion May 10, 1878, in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek father and Italian mother. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, lived briefly in Paris, the moved to Greece where he worked as an icon painter. He is known for combining modern painting techniques with religious or traditional Greek themes.
The ceiling frescoes at Agios Georgios are one of the several commissions he had received and depict Christ on the episcopal throne.
